Class X : Chemistry
Chapter: The Periodic Table
Reader Friendly Format
Pre-requisites

By the early 1800s so many elements and compounds had been discovered that similarities and trends had caught the attention of the early chemists. Eventually this realisation led to the statement of a powerful generalisation concerning the properties of elements, viz., the periodic law.
This topic traces the origin of what we know today as the modern periodic table, and discusses the interesting sequence of the way in which the modern periodic table evolved. It also looks at the concept of periodicity of properties of elements.
  1. Elements are pure substances, which cannot be broken down into simpler substances. (Explanation)
  2. The number of protons present in the atom of an element is said to be its atomic number. (Explanation)
  3. Atomic mass is the mass of an atom, which generally corresponds to the mass of the nucleus of that atom. (Explanation)
  4. Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but different mass numbers (or atomic mass). (Explanation)
  5. Elements have been categorised into metals, non-metals, metalloids and noble gases. (Explanation)

Pre-test

A pre-test allows you to be sure you have a clear understanding of the concepts given above. Your score in this test is an indicator of your familiarity with the pre-requisites. We suggest you go through the pre-requisites again in case you do not score high in this test. And remember, you can take this test only once (unless specified otherwise). The evaluation for this test will be available in your performance tracker.
